"I am the Light"

2016 - 2022

In this series I try to make sense of how light has been used as an aesthetic element and a metaphysical concept to create beauty and manipulate our understanding to further the love of god from the inside of man-made spaces.

The conductor, the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, an impressive architectural space designed for the use of prayer and religious ceremony but commonly known as the city’s biggest tourist attraction.

Here I explore the purpose of the stained glass work of Catalan artist Joan Vila-Grau who designed and installed the windows in the early 2000s based on original sketches by Antoni Gaudi. From my first visit in 2007 I became fascinated with the light and colour spectacle projected by the sunlight in the stained glass windows.  But it wasn’t until 2016 when I started visiting the basilica at least once a year, as a tourist booking my ticket and queuing like everyone else so I could blend in and photograph this colour display.
